Dry Floatation

Many Spa treatments we enjoy today have evolved from the foundation of ‘health through water’ or water therapy and the same can be said of dry floatation. One of the most relaxing and calming treatments you can treat yourself to is a floatation experience, which has been around since the 1950s – although floating in the Dead Sea has been enjoyed for centuries before this!

Dry Floatation allows the body to enjoy the sensation of weightlessness and floating, without the hassle of getting wet. Dry floatation allows you to isolate the mind from the body by removing all sensory stimuli. It is the perfect way to switch off your mind and allow your troubles to float away.

How Does it work?

Users enter an enclosed pod, lying on top of a soft, dry membrane in a dark and quiet room. The membrane slowly fills with water, allowing the user to stay dry while floating above the surface of the water. Appointments are usually between 20-40 minutes, during which the body feels completely weightless, simulating zero gravity. Gentle vibrations massage the body to release muscle tension and further a deeper state of wellbeing.  The idea is that you should lose sensory feeling in your body, transforming you into a floating consciousness. The mind loses all sense of time and space as you slip into a deep meditation. Some people feel so completely relaxed, that they fall asleep until they are gently woken by a therapist. Some people have reported experiencing out-of-body experiences or hallucinations and everyone enjoys a deep and lasting sense of relaxation.

Dry flotation is different from float therapy. Float Therapy uses baths filled with water and Epsom salts which is intended to nourish the skin and body and remove toxins. Dry flotation is different in that the focus is on relaxation of the muscles and joints. It encourages a feeling of weightlessness and deep relaxation instead of nourishment. The floating sensation is different to floating in the sea as you are not experiencing ripples in the water or anticipating movement. You are simply fully weightless, relaxed and lost in your own consciousness.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of a Dry Flotation Experience are different for each person. The main benefit is a feeling of deep relaxation for the duration of your experience and long after. This can enable deep sleep and healthy sleep patterns. Other benefits include an opportunity to practice meditation with no distractions.

For those looking for a physical health boost, dry flotation also helps to aid recovery time from exercise, increase endorphins, reduce blood pressure and improve circulation. Dry Floatation can be used in the reduction of chronic pain with many users experiencing a dramatic reduction of pain after multiple sessions.  Some people think of dry floatation simply as an opportunity to experience complete peace and quiet without daily distractions and demands! Dry Floatation is more effective after a massage when your body is already in a state of relaxation and your mind is clear.

Other benefits may include:

  • Speeds up recovery time from physical exercise.

  • Helps to enable deep and healthy sleep patterns.

  • Promotes recovery from muscular and skeletal injuries.

  • Reduces swelling.

  • Increases endorphin production.

  • Reduces blood pressure.

  • Improves circulation.

  • Energises the body.

  • Clears the mind.

  • Accelerates learning.
