Tips for winter skincare

Winter can be tough on our skin. We are constantly being exposed to changes in temperature moving from cold air to artificial heat inside. Air conditioning, heaters, harsh wind and low temperatures can break down the skins natural barrier, drawing moisture away from the skin leading to dry patches, deep lines and wrinkles and a grey complexion. Read our tips to help build your skincare routine because good winter skin habits are born in summer.

Daily Routine

A good skincare routine is essential all year round, whether yours has three steps or ten. Always start off by cleansing and washing your face, making sure any excess product is removed. Apply toner, eye creams and serums if you like. Then use a really good moisturiser to ensure your skins natural barrier can stand up to the elements. The most important part of your daily routine is sun protection. Wear SPF with factor 30 and above every single day, rain hail or shine, especially on your face. The suns harmful rays can damage your skin through the clouds & throughout the year and an SPF with both UVA & UVB filters will reduce damage.

Its also important to take a vitamin D supplement from October until March every year. Most people living in Ireland don’t get enough sun (even in summer!) meaning we have a Vit D deficiency. Taking a supplement is important for our skins defences and can preventing flare ups of like acne, rosacea, and eczema. It also improves our mood and energy levels when maintained at a regular level.

Moisturiser

Moisturiser should be used twice a day every day, whether you have oily or dry skin. If you have itchy skin in winter time, its likely caused by dry skin and a rich moisturiser can be used to maintain hydration. You should also look after your nutrition and hydration to prevent dry skin. Good skin hydration can reduce the chances of extreme dryness or oiliness, both of which are harmful to skin and can cause skin conditions like acne. Choosing the right product is essential and this may change depending on the time of year. Consult a skincare professional in Osprey Spa for a bespoke recommendation based on your skin type

Nightly Routine

At night our skin goes into repair and restore mode, so an evening skincare routine is so important. Start off with a cream or oil based cleanser. Avoid foam or micellar waters as they contain alcohol which is drying. Exfoliate gently and regularly, once or twice a week is enough. Add toner, serum and eye cream if you like. Finish with a heavy night cream or moisturiser – absolutely essential to keep your skin barrier protected. If you like, you can introduce Retinoids to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. Remember that it may take a couple of weeks of constant use for the skin to acclimatise to retinol use. You should also cut down on shower times and temperatures , keeping them warm, not hot and treat yourself to an overnight mask when you feel you need it.
