Winter weather is not fun for skin. Cold weather leads to low air humidity which results in dry skin that often becomes cracked, painful and unsightly. Just because we don’t bare as much skin in the winter doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take great care of it. Here are our top tips to keep that healthy winter glow.
Hydration
Goodness comes from the inside out. In summer we drink plenty of water to keep cool but in winter we prefer a warm drink to help us heat up. Coffee and other caffeinated drinks can cause dehydration to our organs, including the biggest one of all – our skin. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day, even during the colder months, and your skin will look and feel great. If you would prefer a hot drink, try hot water with lemon instead.
Moisturise
Dry skin can be treated in a number of ways, ranging from very pricey to very cheap, but you get what you pay for. The easiest and best way to combat it is by using a really good quality moisturiser twice a day. We recommend 100% organic Voya products. We use them in our spa and our staff swear by them! They have a fantastic hydrating moisturiser called ‘Softly Does It’, which promises to re-hydrate even the most damaged skin and improve skin tone.
Sunscreen
We know it isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when we think of the colder months but the sun can damage your skin all year round. Just because its cloudy or cold doesn’t stop harmful UVA rays from causing your skin lasting damage. UVB rays (which are the ones that cause burns and redness) are lessened by clouds but UVA rays (which cause dark spots, wrinkles and activate certain forms of skin cancer) are present year-round. Wear a good quality sunscreen year-round or at least ensure your daily moisturiser or makeup has a sun protection factor of at least 15.
Facial
For an all-round boost for your skin, including getting rid of any dead skin cells, cleansing and moisturising, ensure that you get regular facials. Winter is the best time of year to treat yourself and your skin, and arguably the time when your skin needs it the most. Why not treat yourself to one of our magical Voya facials in Osprey Spa to ensure your skin is healthy, hydrated and prepared for whatever mother nature throws your way.
Steam
A natural favourite of ours and the most inexpensive way to look after your face is to steam it. The benefits of steam includes cleansing & softening your skin and steaming out any imperfections such as blackheads so they are ready for removal. To steam your face at home, boil some water and add some tea tree oil, lemon or any other natural ingredient. Wash your face and sit with your face over the bowl with a towel over your head. Don’t forget to close your pores afterwards with a toner.
